Please Help Us Celebrate Our Most Senior Senior’s 19th Birthday!

Senior Paws Sanctuary rescues senior dogs in local shelters in Southwest Florida. Morgan is our special guy and he is our most senior senior!

On March 25, 2016 Senior Paws Sanctuary received a phone call from Lee County Domestic Animal Services, a local shelter in Fort Myers, Florida. The shelter explained they had just taken in an elderly Dachshund that had just lost his human companion and found himself alone, scared and now homeless.

When we arrived at the shelter we were shown a long-haired red Dachshund. He was cute yet quite comical looking with his milky eyes, wispy patches of hair and a protruding snaggletooth. Without hesitation the rescue said yes and in the same moment we were told he was 18 years old!

Senior Paws Sanctuary relies solely on foster homes for the dogs they rescue. It was not difficult to find a volunteer who would open their home and heart to Morgan. Morgan adjusted quickly to his new environment. He now had a warm bed and place to call home, in addition he inherited another senior dog companion. Like two elderly men the dogs meandered around the house quickly plopping down in the same spot to rest. Unsure of the time he had left it was decided Morgan would retire with his new foster family.

In an attempt to give Morgan a life that most dogs would dream of Morgan’s foster family created a bucket list for him. His bucket list can be found on Facebook, Making Memories with Morgan (just click the link to be taken there) and is a platform where community members can suggest ideas and experiences for Morgan.

Once Senior Paws Sanctuary shared the news about Morgan’s arrival and bucket list the ideas started coming in. Some adventures include getting his own doggie ice cream from the Love Boat Ice Cream, the local hot spot for delicious treats; going through the drive through at Burger King; riding in a fire truck and ambulance; going to a baseball game; getting to sit on a Harley Davidson; going to the local dog beach; meeting a celebrity; visiting a crime laboratory; meeting new friends at a dog park; having his very own photoshoot; attending beach yoga; meeting Santa; receiving Bark Boxes from admirers; traveling on an airplane; seeing snow and even completing training to be a therapy dog at the local hospice house.

The rescue and the foster family are currently planning yet another celebration for Morgan.

Paperwork received from the shelter proved to us that Morgan was 18 years old the day he was rescued. We do not have an exact birthdate for Morgan and have decided to use his rescue date as his birthday, March 25th the day he was given a second chance at life.

On March 25 of 2017 Senior Paws Sanctuary will be celebrating Morgan’s 19th birthday. We would like to invite everyone that reads about Morgan, visits his Facebook page and has even met him in person to join us in the celebration. Morgan’s bucket list wish is to receive birthday cards from all over the world. If Morgan’s story has touched your heart and you want to contribute more to Morgan’s bucket list wish, we are asking you to include a one dollar bill inside the birthday card so that Morgan can help his friends at Senior Paws Sanctuary.
